The pain of grieving becomes magnified at Christmas time. The Christmas songs often miss that this isn’t the most wonderful time of year when your heart is hurting—even when we deeply believe in the hope of Jesus.
While the rest of the world is decking the halls and making merry, the holidays are another stinging reminder of the deep loss in grief.
I remember facing our first Christmas in fresh grief. I desperately wanted to give my seven children a joy-filled season. Goodness knows we needed joy. But we also needed comfort. I couldn’t imagine how to pull off a Christmas that would bring any kind of sparkle to their eyes without Dan.
Truth is, grief doesn’t take a holiday. Grief seeps into even the best moments of Christmas as you hang their empty stocking, see the gaping hole in every photo, feel them missing in their seat at the table.
I needed a playlist of Christmas songs to comfort but also point me to hope. Because though the season can be hard, Christmas brings us hope born in a manger—Jesus came to be with us in our pain, redeem us to himself and bring us into an eternity with him.
I’ve curated a playlist of Christmas songs to comfort in grief. You can access the full playlist on Spotify or scroll through the songs included here.
May these songs help you feel seen, see Jesus, and bring comfort wherever this Christmas finds you.

This is a. Wonderful list! You might want to consider “Somewhere in Christmas” by Michael W.Smith. It’s on his newest Christmas album that released in October.
