A Peek Into My Quiet Time

Sometimes talking about How to Do A Quiet Time stirs up guilt. We could all pray more and get up earlier and be more consistent. But it’s really as simple as God wooing us to Him as each new day starts.

Rhonda, at CultivingaHome.com asked me to answer this question:

When do you fit in your quiet time every day? Is it before kids get up or during the day so the kids see you in the word?

Best Books for Children’s Grief

Best Books for children's grief | help children grief | kids grieving | children books heaven

When children are grieving, it’s so important to keep an ongoing conversation about what has happened and what they are feeling. Books for children’s grief can help prompt that conversation.

Children don’t necessarily express their grief like adults. And they may have questions and fears after the death of a parent, sibling, friend or grandparent.

When Dan passed away, I had 6- and 4-year-olds (along with tweens and teens). I wanted to help my children process their grief and continue to move through it. Not talking about our deceased loved ones doesn’t avoid grief; it postpones it. Books were one way to keep intentional conversations going so that my kids could grief in a healthy way.

Today, I’m sharing some of the best books for children’s grief I’ve found.

Rest for the Weary and Worried

09.04.2014 By Lisa Appelo 27 Comments

When I was wrestling with worry, God brought this one truth to mind that changed everything.

Have you been in a place where you were pressed by way too many needs? Worried about the outcome of something in your life? Wondering how in the world it will turn out?

I’ve definitely been there. Mine came most heavily after Dan died. I was not just crushed by grief but also overwhelmed with the immense task ahead of me. Dan and I had entered this parenting thing together and I could not imagine raising seven kids without him.  Teen boys that needed a strong dad, a little boy just coming into his own and our littlest girl who was just starting to know her dad.

On top of all that, Dan’s death brought with it lots of paperwork. I had so many decisions to make, forms to complete, errands to run, calls to make, accounts to set up or close, people to meet with, issues to manage.

Easy 100 Days Counting Activity

Who doesn’t love an easy and inexpensive project that will help teach your kids place value? This is a great way to count up to 100, mark the school days and learn to group by 10’s. Ready?

All you need is three containers and 100 popsicle sticks.  You can use any kind of container — coffee cans, small baskets or canning jars work great.  I’m using three aluminum pails we already had from the dollar store.

Blessing God in The Suffering

08.26.2014 By Lisa Appelo 5 Comments

The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21

This has always been a really hard verse for me. You’ve probably sung the same upbeat chorus based on this verse that I have. Singing it makes it seem so easy.

“When the dark closes in, Lord,
still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name,
Blessed by the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name.”

But actually, there’s a small pit in my stomach even now as I read this verse.
