Last year, I needed something more out of Christmas than the rush of a to-do list and the noise from endless commercials. I wanted to focus my family on Jesus and build the anticipation of Christmas Day.
I decided to tell the story of Jesus’ birthday through our Nativity set.
Each night, the kids unwrapped one piece of our Nativity and added it to the manger scene.
But we also unwrapped the real Christmas story as we read scriptures from the Old Testament prophecies of a Messiah, the angelic visitations to Mary and Joseph and the familiar verses in Luke where the babe is found wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
Maybe your family is like mine — where the commercialization of Christmas and the sheer busyness of December can so easily divert our focus from Jesus’ birth.
That’s exactly why I wrote Countdown to Christmas: Unwrapping the Christmas Story with Your Family in 15 Days. I wanted to center our family’s December around the real Christmas story — the birth of Jesus.
Countdown to Christmas is designed to be open-and-go — while it’s hands-on as your kids build the Nativity, there’s no craft list to assemble or globs of glitter to sweep up. The 15-day length gives your family margin for nights out or missed days while allowing you to build up the excitement of counting down to Christmas Day.
This Christmas family devotional will help you:
- Bring the story of Jesus’ birth to light in a hands-on way as you connect scripture to the traditional nativity scene.
- Build the manger scene one piece each day as you read the corresponding Bible verse and devotional.
- Breathe anticipation and excitement into your Christmas preparation.
Countdown to Christmas has been used by families who have preschoolers as well as families with older kids and teens.
And today we’re celebrating the RE-launch of Countdown to Christmas! (cue the confetti…!)
First, the book has a whole new look.
Second, you can now get Countdown to Christmas right here. I heard from so many of you who wanted to download it to your phone, tablet or laptop so I hope this will make it much easier and accessible for you. It’s also still available through Amazon on your Kindle (or even iPad or computer).
Finally, to celebrate the RE-launch of Countdown to Christmas, I’m donating 20% of all proceeds for books SOLD TODAY to Mission of Hope Haiti for their Hurricane Matthew recovery. As many of you know, Haiti was devastated by the hurricane in October and this solid, gospel-based missions organization is on the ground meeting real need. What an honor to partner with them.
Last year, so many of you got a copy of this book that it skyrocketed to #1 in children’s holiday books!
Please feel free to share this with friends and family who might be looking for a tradition to help them center their Christmas on Christ.
